According to the McKinsey Payments Study, Mobile Money for the Unbanked: Unlocking the Potential in Emerging Markets, one billion consumers in emerging markets own a mobile phone yet lack access to even basic banking services. Mobile phones are owned by 50% of the people in developing countries but banking is only reaching 37%.    “Most stash their savings wherever they safely can and turn to relatives and friends whenever credit needs arise.”   The number of unbanked consumers with mobile phones will increase from 1 billion to 1.7 billion by 2012, according to the study.

DSI works with mobile network operators to access this untapped consumer financial market.  DSI’s systems enable access mobile data as credit files.  Our decision systems provide lenders relative risk scores for mobile subscribers, many of whom are potential micro-borrowers.  Lending becomes convenient, objective and immediate for mobile subscribers.   Mobile based lending generates more and higher quality lending than an underwriting process that requires a borrower to travel to a town center for service by a loan officer.
