According to the McKinsey Payments Study, Mobile Money for the Unbanked: Unlocking the Potential in Emerging Markets, one billion consumers in emerging markets own a mobile phone yet lack access to even basic banking services. Mobile phones are owned by 50% of the people in developing countries but banking is only reaching 37%. “Most stash their savings wherever they safely can and turn to relatives and friends whenever credit needs arise.” The number of unbanked consumers with mobile phones will increase from 1 billion to 1.7 billion by 2012, according to the study.
